Midwife’s Role

As a midwife, my role is to provide my experience and knowledge and support to the women and her family, responding to their needs. I offer my advice and council when needed and respect the rights of the women and couple to be the decision makers.

I only work with informed women who choose homebirth and take responsibility for that choice and who want a partnership with shared decision making. My role is to share my knowledge and experience, and to help parents make informed decisions.

During pre-natal care I offer all standard tests and lab work as well as ultrasound, and discuss the pros and cons of each available test. Parents can opt to decline any tests they choose to.

I support parents informed decision.

During birth my role is to provide responsible attention and presence, being available 24/7.

I work closely with others in the birth team and respond to the needs as they arise.

I will support, nurture, encourage, and be present while keeping a watchful eye, recognizing and managing complications when occasionally needed. I provide necessary skills, equipment and timely transfer when necessary.

My responsibility is:

  1. To have total integrity in my work

  2. Be skilled in midwifery care including life saving skills (such as treatment of postpartum bleeding and infant resuscitation)

  3. Provide for timely emergency response, stabilization and transfer in the rare case of an emergency.

  4. Provide information to make shared decisions and respect the parents right to have access to or decline any or all tests, procedures that are the standard of care

  5. Maintain required continuing education in my field

  6. Be available 24/7 unless informed of my absence and provide adequate backup care.
